What is the Political Courage Test?

New Mexico State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-life a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I'm pro-life ... but I also obey the law. Roe v Wade governs. NM ignores that law by enabling and encouraging through policy and Medicaid funding, late-term abortions that are counter to Roe v Wade. I'd like to change that.
No a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes c) Do you support eliminating the state tax on Social Security benefits?
No d) Do you support tax credits to promote the purchase of electric vehicles?
The NM Tax Code is a shambles of exceptions, special circumstances, and (frankly) unused deals for special interests that have come and gone. The entire Code should be rewritten using the 2003 Blue Ribbon Task Force Commission findings as a starting point.
Yes a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
No e) Do you support automatic voter registration?
e) there should be choice, not automatic registration. c) the devil is in the details; complete independence isn't possible but redistricting should NOT be a political function d) need the details, but with specific exceptions - yes
Yes a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Yes c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
Yes d) Do you support the use of private prisons in New Mexico?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
No f) Do you support the legalization of recreational marijuana?
a) NM has not had the political will to execute - until we do, leave capital punishment alone b) some crimes, yes c) state and local law enforcement should cooperate, not necessarily enforce d) for lesser crimes requiring reduced security, with a properly supervised contract f) I support decriminalizing low level drug laws and use fines, and making recreational marijuana the new tax cash cow is the wrong reason to legalize.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
No e) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of New Mexico?
No f) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
Yes g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
a) focusing on infrastructure b) rewrite the tax code, taxes should be low, broad, fair, easy to understand and easy to administer c) not across the board, but to reduce redunant jurisdiction and make work regulations without merit to outcome d)not at this time, but I'd like to see able bodied individuals perform public service e) we've taken sufficient action f) see question (c) g) yes, especially since much of the economic crises is imposed by shutdown
No a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in New Mexico?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in New Mexico?
No d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from New Mexico high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
a) the best educational policies are local b) for publicly chartered schools, yes c) we've recently done that - they should be treated and paid as professionals, and we should demand professional outcomes d) we are all better off with an educated public, lawfully here or not, but I want those in the US unlawfully to pursue citizenship or get a lawful permit - come out of the shadows, within which we all lose.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
a) from a tax credit point of view, yes, but not direct funding b) we need good air quality standards, within which greenhouse gases reside c) with respect to capital outlay, improvements to sewage collection and treatment, yes.
No a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yes c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training?
No d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
b) If the buyer and seller are not known to each other, there needs to be a check and a process to obtain it. I don't want those who can not legally purchase weapons to legally purchase weapons, but the legislation NM has enacted in this regard is unenforceable and 'feel good' legislation without real substance or merit

f) too often, we interfere with how businesses are run, e) we make choices and if there are limitations resulting from that - it is part of the decision process. d) this is heart breaking, but no. a) huge problem, needs universal involvement which includes the government
No a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in New Mexico's anti-discrimination laws?
No b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Mexico's anti-discrimination laws?
No c) Do you support greater efforts by New Mexico state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
Yes d) Do you support the inclusion of the phrase "In God We Trust" on all public buildings and license plates?
I oppose discrimination. Period. Pay should be based on the value of the job performed and the skill with which it is performed. Chromosomes should be the issue - period.
Focus on the future, don't dwell on the past but honor New Mexicos traditions, heritage and diverse cultures. My priorities address what is best for NM economically and socially, to improve and expand our power grid while shoring up the reliability of electrical power, expanding the broadband to connect our vast open spaces, to diminish our vulnerability to crime by increasing the size of our security forces - while ensuring they are fully and appropriately trained, improving and maintaining health care and with science based rules so we can live and work in spite of COVID.
My community is in the top 10, nationally, for violent crime - which is made worse by an educational system that consistently delivers substandard results and an economic environment that does not serve our state very well - and they are all exacerbated by the COVID crisis. Each of these conditions amplifies the other and you can't fix one without fixing the others. But I'd start with public safety so we can all then focus on the other issues. It gets paid for by prioritizing it in the budget and then modifying our overbearing regulatory statutes.
